Prostate-specific antigen (or just PSA) is proteins that produce in the prostate gland. In normal men, PSA is present in small quantities, if the PSA is elevated it may shows the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate disorders. A blood test to measure PSA is considered the most effective test currently available for the early detection of prostate cancer, but this effectiveness has also been questioned.
Men with prostate cancer the PSA level often increase over time, however, when men grow older, the PSA level can elevate and both benign prostate conditions and prostate cancer become more common. The most frequent benign prostate conditions are prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (enlargement of the prostate). There is no evidence that prostatitis or BPH causes cancer, but it is possible for a man to have one or both of these conditions and to develop prostate cancer as well. . So, further test needed to prove whether the rising levels of PSA over time will associate with both localized and metastatic prostate cancer (CaP).
PSA test blood is a simple test by testing the PSA level in your blood. The doctor takes a blood sample, and the amount of PSA is measured in a laboratory. Because PSA is produced by the body and can be used to detect disease, it is sometimes called a biological marker or a tumor marker. Men with prostate cancer have a tendency having a higher PSA level. Results of the PSA test under 4 nanograms per milliliter of blood are generally considered normal, from 4 to 10 nanograms is in borderline, more than 10 nanograms is considered as the possibility of prostate cancer. PSA blood test is suggested by doctor for men age 50 or more.
However, the PSA level alone is not enough to determine someone got prostate cancer or benign prostate condition. But PSA test is important for the doctor to take decision for further diagnosis for prostate cancer.
